Q: We have an employee who works Tuesday to Thursday, but she regularly has Tuesdays off, blaming it on the illness on her children. It is affecting the productivity of the business – what can we do?
A: The employee needs to provide a medical certificate for the Tuesday absences – you should request this of her.

If the absences are regularly on a Tuesday, you can have a discussion with the employee about why this is occurring. It is important not to frame this discussion as a disciplinary issue; rather it should focus on what your organisation can do to lessen the absences. This provides the legal basis for you to seek more information about the absences – and if they are not for genuine reasons, make the employee accountable.
